UAE Corporate Tax: Frequently Asked Questions (2026)
Last updated: 24 July 2026. Figures reflect published FTA rules as of this date.
When is the UAE Corporate Tax filing deadline for the 2025 financial year?
30 September 2026 for businesses whose financial year ended 31 December 2025. The rule: the return must be filed, and any tax paid, within 9 months of the end of the tax period. The Federal Tax Authority has confirmed no extensions. Payment only counts when the money arrives in the FTA account, so practitioners advise starting bank transfers by about 25 September 2026.
Do freelancers and individuals have to file UAE Corporate Tax?
Yes, if total business turnover exceeded AED 1,000,000 in a calendar year. It is turnover (revenue), not profit. Salary income, personal investment income, and personal real estate income generally do not count toward this threshold. If you crossed AED 1M in 2025, you should already have registered by 31 March 2026, and your first return for calendar 2025 is due 30 September 2026.
My company made no profit. Do I still need to file?
Yes. Filing is mandatory even at zero profit, and even if you elect Small Business Relief. The relief itself is claimed inside the return, so not filing means not getting it.
My company is in a free zone with a 0% rate. Do I still need to file?
Yes. All free zone companies are in scope of Corporate Tax. A Qualifying Free Zone Person claiming the 0% rate must still file a full return on time to keep that status.
What is Small Business Relief (SBR)?
An election that treats an eligible UAE resident business as having no taxable income for the period, so the tax due is AED 0, with simplified compliance. Condition: revenue at or below AED 3,000,000 in the current tax period AND in every previous tax period (for periods starting on or after 1 June 2023). Going above AED 3M in any period disqualifies you permanently.
Is Small Business Relief automatic?
No. You must actively elect it inside each Corporate Tax return on the EmaraTax portal. Many owners assume it applies automatically; it does not.
Who cannot use Small Business Relief?
- Qualifying Free Zone Persons (companies claiming the 0% free zone rate).
- Members of multinational groups with consolidated revenue above roughly AED 3.15 billion.
When does Small Business Relief end?
It is only available for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026. For calendar-year businesses, financial years 2025 and 2026 are the last chances to use it.
What are the penalties for filing or paying late?
- Late registration: AED 10,000 fixed.
- Late filing: AED 500 per month (or part of a month) for the first 12 months, then AED 1,000 per month after that.
- Late payment: 14% per year, charged monthly, on the unpaid tax.
Can the AED 10,000 late-registration penalty be waived?
Yes. Under an FTA initiative effective 14 April 2025, the penalty is waived (or refunded if already paid) when the business files its first return within 7 months of the end of its first tax period, instead of the usual 9. For a first tax period equal to calendar 2025, that waiver date was 31 July 2026. Businesses that already paid the fine can file a reconsideration request via EmaraTax after filing.
How long does filing the return actually take?
On the EmaraTax portal (eservices.tax.gov.ae), a typical first return takes 30-45 minutes IF your accounts are ready. Preparing the accounts is the real work and happens before you log in.
How long must I keep my records?
Records and documents supporting the return must be kept for 7 years.
